Assurance "Assurance: Our Seal and Pledge"  How does one know for sure that he will spend eternity in God’s presence?  How can you know for sure that you will safely arrive in the presence of Jesus?  Is it possible to fall out along the way—to rebel to the extent that you are closed out of the family?  In other words, Is it possible for a believer to lose his salvation? Gil Rugh
Babies

What is the Destiny of Babies Who Die?  -  The Bible teaches that all men are sinners, deserving of the wrath of God. It also clearly teaches that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ. When discussing these truths, however, one question often comes up: “What is the eternal destiny of babies who die or the mentally retarded who are not able to comprehend the Gospel?” Do they go to heaven or hell? Is there any way we can know?

In this file we will examine what the Bible says about the eternal destiny of babies and others who fit into this category of people who never reach a stage, mentally, where they can accept or reject the Gospel.

Baptism (01) A Study of Water Baptism. Tony Capoccia
Baptism (02) Few issues throughout church history have been as widely debated as that of baptism. Shortly after the time of the apostles, various and conflicting views began to arise concerning the purpose and methods of baptism.

Even today, many churches hold different views on this important subject. Some hold that baptism is a necessary part of salvation while others say baptism is a testimony that one has been saved. Some churches practice sprinkling while others emphasize immersion. Some churches baptize infants while others only baptize adult believers.

With all the confusion on this issue one may ask, "Who is right and how do we know? "The lack of clarity on this issue should drive us to the Bible for the answers to these issues.

Accepting the Bible as the authority and not church tradition, Pastor Gil Rugh in Baptism: Truth or Tradition, systematically shows what the Word of God has to say about baptism—what it is and what its purpose is. Pastor Rugh shows that the Bible is clear on the issue of baptism and that confusion on this topic has come primarily when men’s ideas have been added to the Word of God.

Bible (04) How We Got our Bible - Most Christians understand that the Bible they hold in their hands is the inspired Word of God. Yet very few have a general understanding of the origin of the Bible. The purpose of this class, therefore, is to show the student how the Bible came to be and why it can be accepted as the unerring, authoritative Word of God. Mike Vlach
Bible (05) Why We Can Trust The Bible - The Bible is God's message to mankind. Some call it God's "love letter" to the human race. Christians say it is infallible, without error in the original text. Its critics, of course, don't agree saying the Bible was written by men, that it has errors, and it is not completely true. But let me give you some thoughts on why I believe the Bible to be the "Very words from the mouth of God." Tony Capoccia
Bible (06) Reading the Bible - "To have the Scriptures in our own language with a ready access to them and complete freedom to study them - these are great privileges. Yet we can fail to profit from the Bible and make little progress in understanding it. The Christian life is paved with the best intentions of reading the Scriptures regularly, and also with many broken resolutions and disappointments. Jesus exhorts us to search the Scriptures [John 5.39]; that is, we are to ransack the Word of God, to pore over it, subject it to every kind of analysis, and grasp its every shade of meaning. We are to be obsessed with a desire to understand it. This passionate concern is never to become incidental or secondary. It should be a priority in the Christian life, an activity around which our existence revolves. If man cannot live by bread alone but by every word which proceeds out of the mouth of God, then God's Word must have an absolutely basic place in the whole of our Christian life. To its reading we must apply ourselves with the utmost industry." Geoffrey Thomas
Birth Control

Birth Control Pill: Abortifacient (A substance or device used to induce abortion) and Contraceptive by William F. Colliton, Jr., M.D., FACOG.  The author is Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at George Washington University Medical Center.

For several years I was convinced that labeling birth control pills as "abortifacient" was the work of an extremist right wing medical conspiracy. Only on entering into a serious study of the matter did I become convinced of the error of my ways.

This file examines and proves the fact that the use of Birth Control Pills can cause abortions.

Catholics (04) Catholic Concerns - by Mary Ann Collins (A Former Catholic Nun)

"Since I left the Catholic Church, I have done research about various issues relating to Catholicism. If you have difficulty with some of the things that I say, I understand how you feel. I was deeply loyal to the Catholic Church, and it grieves me to learn unpleasant things about it. But we need the truth, even if it is disturbing. God is faithful. He will give us the strength and the wisdom to deal with it."

Catholics (06) "The Attractions of the Roman Catholic Church" - What is it that some Anglicans (and other Protestants) find so attractive about Roman Catholicism? Why are so many, even within Evangelicalism, trying to undo the Reformation? The American Presbyterian minister, R. L. Church (03) The church is God’s program for ministry in this age, but much confusion exists concerning its nature and purpose. That is why Pastor Gil Rugh, in his work, The Church: God’s Program for Ministry, looks at the key issues involving the church and what the church’s role is. Pastor Rugh addresses such questions as:
  • Who makes up the church?
  • When did the church begin?
  • What are the distinctions between the universal and local church?
  • How involved should Christians be with parachurch organizations?
  • How are believers to function as part of the church?

Division and Diversion  -  Nine current issues, which are gaining momentum in both the world and the Church, are selected for discussion in this booklet. Each of these movements is widely accepted by the world and is subtly moving into the Church. We, as believers in Jesus Christ, are commanded to be alert to what is taking place in the world around us. This study endeavors to make us more aware of the issues we are facing.

Church Discipline [01] Discipline is a serious but often neglected responsibility of the Church. We live in a day where tolerance of sin in the Body of Christ is increasingly normal, yet the mandate of the Bible for a pure Church has not changed. God has set forth in His Word specific instructions concerning how the Church should handle the issue of sin in the family of God.

In Church Discipline: An Evidence of Christian Love, Pastor Gil Rugh looks at the issue of discipline in the Church and addresses the following questions:

  • What is Church discipline?
  • Where does the Bible address this issue?
  • What is the purpose of Church discipline?
  • What principles should be followed in the discipline process?
Gil Rugh
Church Discipline [02] Deliver this Man to Satan - Part of understanding the difficult passage in 1 Cor 5:1-5 is the interpretation of the words "deliver this man to Satan" in 5:5. To explain this statement correctly, one must establish what the sin is that caused Paul to deliver the declaration. Then he should realize the responsibility of the local church in Corinth to deal with such a situation. The nature of the authority behind the directive needs also to be appreciated. Then details of the disciplinary action itself need clarification. The whole set of circumstances emphasizes how important it is for local churches to implement church-disciplinary actions in dealing with sinning members and to use sound principles in doing so.

Church Growth (03) The Gospel According to Hybels and Warren - The numbers are certainly impressive, the buildings expensive, and the congregations expansive. And there is plenty of reason to be enthusiastic— lost people are attending weekend services, the "unchurched" are being reached, and auditoriums once empty are being filled. But does the evangelistic philosophy behind the so-called "Church Growth Movement" (hereafter CGM) match up to the biblical model? Does it meet Scripture's standards or does it fall short of God's expectations? These are certainly important questions, from both an ecclesiological and a soteriological point-of-view. After all, "the church growth movement is extraordinarily influential and significant within American churches today." But is the soteriology that undergirds CGM correct? If so, it should be wholeheartedly embraced by pastors and congregations worldwide; if not, Christian leaders must be warned, lest they unwittingly guide their flocks into both theological and methodological disaster.

Election [01]

Theologians have long debated the concept of God's sovereignty as it relates to the salvation of man. Did God choose us for salvation, or did we choose Him? Great men of God have stood on both sides of the debate.

Many believers stand back in awe, supposing that since great scholars cannot agree on these issues, how can they ever hope to understand them? Others boldly take sides, assuming they clearly understand the problem, only to be considered naive by those who think of themselves as more scholarly.

On one hand, God has told us much that we can understand about this fascinating area of study. At least two things are clear as we explore the doctrine of election. The first is that God is totally sovereign in the affairs of our lives. The second is that God holds man responsible for his decision. How to resolve these complementary concepts is the basis of the debates on divine election.

Pastor Gil Rugh has compiled the major elements of the election debate in Election: Whose Choice? and tackles critical issues such as "Is Man Free?" "Is God Fair?" and "The Purpose of Evangelism."

Family [02]

The Great Duty of Family Religion - “As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” [Joshua 24:15]

How and when a general neglect of family-religion first began to spread over the Christian world, is difficult to determine. As for the early Christians, I am positive it was not so with them: No, they did not falsely believe that religion was to be confined solely to their public worship at church; but, on the contrary, behaved with such godliness and exemplary holiness in their private families, that the Apostle Paul often refers to their house as a church, saying, “Give my greetings to Nympha and the church in her house.” And, I believe, we must forever despair of seeing this spirit of holiness revived in the world, until we see a revival of genuine family religion; and persons unanimously resolving with Joshua, in the words of the text, “As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

And from these words, I will insist on these three things:

I. First, That it is the duty of every head of a family and household to take care, that not only he himself, but also that those committed to his charge, “serve the Lord.”

II. Secondly, I will endeavor to show “how” the head of the family and his household ought to serve the Lord. And,

III. Thirdly, I will offer some reasons, in order to stimulate all family leaders, with their respective households, to serve the Lord in the manner that will be recommended.

First, let me show you that it is the duty of every head of the family and household to take care, that not only he himself, but also that those committed to his charge, must serve the Lord.

Fasting

When You Fast - "Of all the means of grace there is scarcely any concerning which men have run into greater extremes, than that of which our Lord speaks in our text this morning, I mean religious fasting. Some have exalted this type of fasting beyond all Scripture and reason; and others have utterly disregarded it; as it were retaliating by undervaluing it as much as the others had overvalued it! There have been those who have spoken of fasting, as if it were everything in religion; if not the end itself, yet on the opposite extreme has been others who treated the subject of fasting as if it were nothing, as if it were a fruitless labor, which had no relationship at all to Christianity. No doubt the truth lies somewhere in-between. It is not everything, nor yet is it nothing. It is not the end, but it is a precious means to the end; a means which God himself has ordained, and in which therefore, when it is properly used, God will surely give us his blessing.--"John Wesley (1702-1791)

Focus on the Family

This excerpt from the sermon "The Foolishness of the Gospel" addresses the controversy between the ministry of Dr. John MacArthur and that of Dr. James Dobson (Focus on the Family), on the issue of preaching the gospel to change the wickedness of man versus using political legislation to accomplish that end.  Phil Johnson is an elder at Grace community Church and the Executive Director of Grace to You.

Giving "Let each one do just as he has purposed in his heart; not grudgingly or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver," (2 Corinthians 9:7).

The Bible has much to say about money and giving. Yet many Christians today are confused when it comes to these issues. They often wonder: Why do we give? How much should we give? Are there guidelines for giving? What are the results of biblical giving?  In Giving: A Result of Grace, Pastor Gil Rugh examines what the Bible has to say about these issues and how we can glorify Him with the resources He has given us.

Homosexuality [01] Homosexuality and the Old Testament. Only towering cynicism can pretend that there is any doubt what the Scriptures say about homosexuality. P. Michael Ukleja
Homosexuality [02] The Bible says homosexuality is an unacceptable practice. Recently, however, many have claimed God’s commandments concerning homosexuality are outdated or misinterpreted.  Those who condone homosexuality charge that conservative Christians have wrongly taught that a person cannot be a Christian and a homosexual.  Who is right? Is it possible the writers of the Bible were homophobic and simply injected their own bias into God’s Word?

In Homosexuality: A Biblical Perspective, Gil Rugh considers the Old and New Testament views of homosexuality. He shows that all aspects of God’s Word, including His commandments concerning homosexuality, are eternal and unchanging. They have not been misinterpreted. Furthermore, Rugh shows, through God’s Word, the promise to everyone of eternal salvation and freedom from sin when trust is placed in the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Husbands Instructions to Husbands, Fathers & Their Wives (A Study of Men's Roles) - How can a man be the husband and father God wants him to be? Much has been written and discussed concerning this topic, yet the answers given are often laced with the teachings of men rather than the teachings of God as found in the Bible. Instruction to Husbands and Fathers (And Their Wives) looks at what the Bible has to say about how the Christian man can be the person God desires him to be. Gil Rugh
John MacArthur A Defense of John MacArthur against the accusations of Rick Miesel of Biblical Discernment Ministries - Rick Miesel of Biblical Discernment Ministries (BDM) is making an astounding accusation. He claims to have discovered through his research that pastor and author John MacArthur is a false teacher; a wolf in sheep's clothing; a blaspheming psychobabbler and a gross hypocrite. Miesel tries to prove those accusations in his critique titled "John MacArthur: General Teachings/Activities." Miesel offers this critique for a nominal charge either in paper form or on computer disk by writing to Biblical Discernment Ministries, P.O. Masons (02) FREEMASONRY AND THE CHRISTIAN - "Recently the largest Protestant denomination has ruled that membership in the Lodge is up to one's individual conscience. This position is contrary to a traditional Christian view of Freemasonry. Freemasonry is a fraternal order that advocates development of virtue and character among its members, as the authors can attest through their own past membership in it. The soteriology of Freemasonry is strongly antibiblical, as several of its teachings indicate teachings associated with the Lambskin Apron, how to prepare for heaven, the Perfect Ashlar, the Common Gavel, and how to live a worthwhile life. Christian membership in the Lodge is, therefore, impossible to justify in light of Scriptural teachings."Eddy D. Field II and Eddy D. Field III [This article taken from the Master's Seminary Journal, Dr. John MacArthur, President] TMSJ
Modesty Modesty Matters - In this message, Pam Hardy, the wife of Carey Hardy, the Senior Executive Pastor of Grace Community Church, addresses a gathering of ladies at the church, and discusses the subject of modesty, breaking it down into three major sections:  The Need for Modesty, The Goal of Modesty, and The Expression of Modesty.

She has boldly approached a subject that most churches have completely ignored, to their own harm.  Pam presents the biblical mandates for modesty and then very clearly applies these scriptures in very practical ways, discussing such things as: A Christian woman's wardrobe--are the clothes too short? too tight? too low?  She even applies these biblical principles on modesty to Bathing Suits and Wedding Dresses.

This is a must read message for every Christian woman young or old.  Mothers should read it with their daughters, grandmothers with their granddaughters.  I would even suggest it for Fathers and other Christian men and boys so they can understand the key role modesty plays in the Church and in their own personal lives. A very critical message for Pastors, Elders, Deacons.

Prayer (04) "Praying In the Spirit" by John Bunyan (1628-1688)Written in Prison in the year 1662 (John Bunyan is a well-known Christian writer, made famous for his book "Pilgrims' Progress").  "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express" [Romans 8:26].  "I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind" [1 Corinthians 14:15].   An excellent message on prayer by a godly man who certainly knew the power of prayer, as he spent many years of his life in prison for testifying to the Gospel of God's Grace.    (Note: The "Old English" of this message has been updated and edited by Tony Capoccia).

"How to Pray" by R. A. Torrey (1856-1928)"One of the greatest needs of the present day is men and women who will not only start out to pray for things, but pray on and on and on until they obtain that which they seek from the Lord."  What was true in Torrey's day still applies today.  His practical pointers clearly unfold the conditions God has established for intelligent, effective prayer that brings his answers, emphasizing the purpose and importance of prayer. Proverbs The Better Way - A Study in Proverbs  I've turned to the Book of Proverbs, and what I hope will be preeminently a practical message on a theme that I have not found often developed. So I hope it will be a new line of thought with old theology undergirding all of it. All 31 chapters and all 915 verses in the book of Proverbs, as we read in the introduction, are devoted to providing for you and me "Wisdom" to those that are less than fully wise, "understanding" to those who haven't a grasp and understanding of everything in life. To those who are the best trained in scholastics, it has something to offer. And to the smallest child, it has something to offer. Its basic theme, if we were to just sum it up in one sentence, would be: The fear of the Lord leads to divine wisdom for righteous living. Dick

Psychology In recent years the Church has been integrating the theories of modern psychology with the Bible. As a result, many Christian psychologists have become the recognized experts for helping Christians with their practical, daily living. But is there a place for psychology in Christianity?

In Psychology: The Trojan Horse, Gil Rugh addresses the following issues:

  • Should psychology be integrated with the Bible?
  • Can psychology be "Christian?"
  • Is all truth God's truth?
  • What does the Bible say about dealing with sin?

This issue of integrating psychology with the Bible is one that all Christians must face since it concerns the nature of man and the sufficiency of Scripture. Pastor Rugh examines the use of psychology in the Church and challenges believers to return to the Word of God in all matters concerning life and godliness.

Satan (02) "Is Satan Bound Today?" One distinctive of amillennial theology is the belief that Satan is bound during this present age. This belief stems from an interpretation that sees the binding of Satan described in Revelation 20:1-3 as being fulfilled today. Sin (01)  "Sin unto Death" - The "sin unto death" in 1 John 5:16 has provoked widespread discussion. The correct meaning revolves around the nature of the sin and the nature of the death referred to. Tongues In recent decades there has been a rise in the number of people claiming to speak in tongues. Are these claims legitimate and does the Bible teach that Christians should be speaking in tongues today? In his booklet, What About Tongues, Pastor Gil Rugh looks at these issues and helps answer the following questions:
  • What is biblical tongues?
  • What was the purpose of tongues in the Bible?
  • Are Christians to seek speaking in tongues today?
  • What is really happening with the modern tongues movement?

Women (01) "Instructions to Wives, Mothers, & Their Husbands" - A Sermon about the Role of a Woman, from God's perspective.   Addresses many areas, to include the "Working Wife and the Working Mother."  A truth from God's Word that needs to be spoken to today's Church, but so often is avoided because it would not be popular with our generation.  Pastor Gil Rugh speaks a bold and clear message. Women (02) Women Preachers - "In this day we find a rapid advancement of new ideas. The unbelievable suggestion of yesterday, entertained only by a few fanatics, and only mentioned by the conservatives to be ridiculed, is today the bold reform, and tomorrow will be the accepted practice. Novelties are so numerous and so wild and rash, that in even conservative minds the feeling of wonder is exhausted and the instinct of righteous resistance fatigued. A few years ago the preaching by women was universally condemned among all conservative denominations of Christians. Now the idea is being presented to the churches, and female preachers are knocking at our doors. We are already told that public opinion is being swayed because of the boldness and reasonableness of the claims of these woman preachers, that even our own ministers are hesitant to speak out against the movement. These remarks show that a discussion of woman's proper place in the Christian Church is greatly needed.--"R. L. Dabney (1820-1898) Robert Dabney
