Question

I was a little bit confused after reading the article by Spurgeon in the Power for Living.  I had always thought that Spurgeon was preaching and teaching against the celebration of Christmas.  In fact, the Puritans and the Reformers teach this.  Could you help clear this up for me?

Answer

I believe Spurgeon treated Christmas like most Christians, that is, acknowledging its pagan roots, but taking it as an opportunity to Preach Christ, to lift up the truth about Christ to a world that, because of Christmas, might just listen.  He would have been critical of things like Santa Claus, and all the materialism associated with Christmas in our age, but would have also taken the cultural opportunity to fellowship with relatives and friends, but with true worship of Christ.  Below are ten Christmas sermons by Spurgeon that are available on my website.
