Question
I have many magazine articles, pictures, posters, books, CD's.. of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, and many other bands of this world, does God anywhere in His word, clearly state, that once I am changed, and I no longer listen to this music, and look upon the books and pictures, that I am to rid them completely from my life, that is, throw them away? I want what God wants.
Answer
Well, God doesn't specifically say "get rid of the music" but there is
pretty good indication what we are to do with the "stuff" that once
led us away from the truth, and encouraged us into error, the following is an
example of those who became converted, turning away from the past delusions:
"A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and
burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total
came to fifty thousand pieces of silver." [Acts 19:19] (Note: a piece
of silver was a day's wage, so, in today's wages, the value would have been
somewhere in the neighborhood of six million dollars!)
These next Scriptures show that the former "stuff" is no longer to be
in your mind. You are a new creation, a new person, the old person who
like the "junk" of the past is now dead, crucified with Christ, and
you are to think differently:
"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is
excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things." [Philippians
4:8]
"They (God's people, Christians) will no longer defile themselves with
their idols and vile images or with any of their offenses, for I will save them
from all their sinful backsliding, and I will cleanse them. They will be my
people, and I will be their God." [Ezekiel 37:23]
I would destroy that stuff. It is the "world's deception" that
Satan uses to deceive and keep the beauty of Christ hidden. Do not give it
to another, for then you just would be taking part in the spread of deception.
When I was saved, 21 years ago, I threw out all the Playboy magazines, and dump
all the liquor down the drain, and destroyed all the other books and things that
prompted the flesh to ungodly things.
